Topic:
Transport in Humans

Duration:
50 minutes
Remarks and other resource requirements (if any):
3 Tables per group (e.g., 3 tables X 7 groups = 21 tables)
7 Learning Devices
S/N
Time
Activity
Equipment / Remarks
1.
10min
a. Explain to students the need for transport system in humans using the Transport in Man animation.

Key Points:
- In Man and other mammals, numerous cells are situated at the centre of the body far away from the outside environment.
- Simple diffusion alone cannot bring enough oxygen and food materials to these cells nor remove waste products with sufficient speed.
- A transport system is therefore needed to move substances in and out of the cells of the body efficiently.

2.
20min
a. Arrange students into groups of 3.

b. Describe to students the 3 main blood vessels in humans using the Blood vessels animation.
    i.     Artery
   ii.     Capillary
  iii.     Vein

c. Students will conduct an online research on the 3 blood vessels based on their structures such as:
i. Lumen
ii. Endothelium
iii. Smooth muscle
iv. Connective tissue

d. Each group will record findings in the log sheet.

Key Points:
Arteries:
- Carry blood away from the heart
- Carry oxygenated blood (except pulmonary artery)
- Have thick, muscular and elastic walls

Capillaries:
- Have very thin walls (1-cell thick)
- Deliver oxygen and food substances to cells and collect waste products from them

Veins:
- Carry blood towards the heart
- Carry deoxygenated blood (except pulmonary vein)
- Thinner and less elastic walls than arteries
- Have valves along their length to prevent backflow of blood

2. Online research (Learning devices)

3. Log sheet
3.
20min
a. Teacher will explain to students the structural differences between the artery, blood capillary and vein.

b. Students are to design and draw these 3 blood vessels using Sketchup application. Student helpers will assist the technical aspect of the activity. Remind students to save the file on the desktop as: Blood vessels_Group No (e.g., Blood vessels_Group 2).

c. Students will demonstrate their learning outcomes by completing the drawings of the 3 blood vessels with accurate design and labelling.
